Dejavunaturals- Who are you?
We are constantly asked this question so we have decided to answer this question and let you know who we are. Some are wondering since we just appeared. We did not start the traditional way most naturals start. We did not start our journey on YouTube but choose to blog. We will however be sharing our journey with you soon.
Dejavunaturals is an information site base on natural beauty. We offer advice, support, tutorials and soon a show. The site is geared toward the audience that is as we are called "naturals". We do wear our hair natural and healthy some short, some long. YouTube is a source of great inspiration, ladies such as: kimmay, moptopmaven, curlynikki, splinta, tonidaley and so much more made it easy to embark on this journey with them. You can find a few interviews from naturals on our blog and there will be much more of them to come.
Dejavunaturals was formed by Stansia. She is also the writer of the blog and the drive behind the events, and information. She is also featured over the past few years as a writer for websites, news article and most recently artists. She is also currently working on her album and enjoying her journey.
She decided to start this after learning a great deal and how not only to maintain a natural hair but to grow it healthy. Inspired by naturals herself she has been natural her whole life. Here is what she had to say:
“I decided to start dejavunaturals because I really just wanted to share what I was learning. It was quite a bit of information, it reflected the direction in which my life was about to go. I realize quickly how important it is to use things like essential oils, and carrier oils, what it means to live a healthy lifestyle, or how to grow our hair past our shoulders. I mean am sure you can but will your hair have body, and life, soft and manageable, most likely it won’t. It was so touching to see Black women help each other and truly feel inspired and love not only themselves but the people that watch them. First and foremost I love to write it is sort of a therapy for me, am able to just say what I think, learn or see. So I started dejavunaturals with the hopes that I had a lot to offer and someone would be willing to read. When we are constantly being told that this is what we need to look like and why we should over process our hair eventually there needs to be a change. I got inspired by so many ladies on YouTube watching their journey and their stories I embarked on my own journey with a close friend and now dejavunatural ladies Simone. So far our journey is amazing our hair is growing and it's healthy and it's natural. You can find Simone story which is posted in our spotlight section. I always keep saying I want my hair to get so long and healthy that it just blows everywhere when I walk. When we decided to go on this journey it was hard, because there is a stigma attached to wearing natural hair. I mean I have been doing it most of my life although I would go back and forth from braids to weaves but I also damaged my hair by pressing and the hot combs. Once I stop I also became more aware, I wanted to learn about everything I came across, read and share what I learned. So here I am, still learning, growing and sharing. I am so happy now with me, with life, it has been one of the best things I could have ever done. It wasn’t just my hair it was life in general I changed everything the way I eat, the way I work out, the things I did, became a better person. I realize I had to start living for me and not for the past, or what I did, what I was sorry for, people that passed through my life, things I got hurt from I just wanted to live. SO right now, right now am so damn happy. It doesn’t make sense to be this happy but it does to me now."
As naturals we have learned that it takes patience and a lot of care. We only use things like natural products, essential oils, carrier oils, and protective styling such as twists to help maintain help hair, healthy scalp, and growth. For more on natural healthy hair care:

Absolutely Divine
If you looking for a little inspiration to spice up your closet, this is great start. It shows that colour looks great and what a better way to wear colour than with your natural hair. I posted these pictures because the prints... the dresses are absolutely beautiful, they immediately caught my attention when I began explore the company. The company is called Vlisco, they have several stores including the Republic of Congo, Togo, Ivory Coast, The Netherlands, Benim and Nigeria. Their prints are African inspired and I must say divine. I encourage you all to be confident with what you have and embrace who are you. I know it can be so hard sometimes to hold your head up, we all have days were we dont feel our best, but it takes alot to be who you are. I always stress the importance of self-love because you arent able to love people if you cant truly love youself. That is also another reason I stress the importance of taking care of yourself. People will follow in your foot steps and your able to teach and also learn. You also can not take care of anyone that needs you if your are not taking care of youself first. Get inspired to become a better person and live your life to the fullest. It is such an amazing feeling to be at peace to be happy and to just live!!!

Oily Skin
source: sodahead
I discovered something so life altering to me and my skin. I now know how to take care of my oily skin! Some of you may wonder well isn’t that something you should know, I thought so myself. The thing is I thought I knew how to take care of my oily skin, but I was wrong. I spent the last year having some major problems with my skin throughout the summer it just got worst and worst. There were days I had some serious breakouts on my face, sometimes so embarrassed I wore so much makeup, it is a relief to share this article with you because I now have flawless skin. It has become my mission to retain my skins health and even have skin that is unbelievably smooth. Through my research for Dejavunaturals I am learning so much and experiencing so much.
Causes of Oily skin:
· Sebaceous glands: This is what is responsible for oily skin, over productive of these glands and leaves excess amounts of sebum on your skin make it prone to breakouts.
It is necessary for anyone with Oily skin to keep their skin clean; otherwise it will be prone to form acne lesions. Sebum can make the skin sticky attracting dirt from the environment clogging the pores by increasing sebum secretion. Oily skin has open and enlarged pores. Make sure to wash your face a few times a day to remove sebum. It is especially necessary to wash your face at night if you wear make-up. The residues can be the enemy to oily skin, be gentle with your skin and try to prevent the spread of infection if you have acne or broken skin. Massaging the skin improves circulation.
· Hereditary
· Diet
· Hormone levels
· Cosmetics you use
· Clogged pores
· Humidity and hot weather
These causes may vary from skin to skin and could be a reaction from birth control pills, medication to the simplest things such as having a clean face.
Good News: This type of skin is generally slower to show fine lines, wrinkles and discolourations.
Bad News: Oily skin tends to have frequent breakouts, large pores and a greasy appearance from time to time.
What to do?
- Cleanse you face daily with water. I use a clean wash cloth and soak it in warm water and apply it to my face to remove oil from my pores so I am able to clear my skin from sebum. I gently pat my skin and rub away any dirt or oil. I may wash or apply one of my DIY face wash and then apply moisturizer.
- You have to find a product that works well for you; it will not work the same for every skin type or every person. This can be hard as it took a while for me to find products that work. I have also opted to make a lot of products for my skin at home. One of my greatest inspirations was moptopmaven. Her blog has a great recipe for your skin combining oils that do wonders for the skin.
- Avoid using harsh cleansers that may dry out the skin and make the skin become even oilier.
- Use sunscreens that won’t clog pores and are oil free. Oily skin has also been proven to be hereditary. Shea butter is a great natural sunscreen but should be using sparingly.
- Do touch your face constantly, dirty hands and oils from your hands can lead to breakouts. Sensitive skin must be treated with the same care as natural hair.
- Stop over cleansing: Do not cleaning your face four times a day, if you are using some store brought products you may be damaging the skin or stripping the skin.
- Change your makeup frequently: This is very important if you wear a lot of makeup you have to make sure to not only clean your face before you put the make-up on but after. Make sure your face is CLEAN. The last thing you want is the makeup to go into those enlarged pores and stay there to contribute to your already oily skin.
- Use a clay mask, Bentonite clay is amazing for the face: It works wonders
Oily and sensitive skin:
This skin type requires products that won’t irritate the skin. When it comes to the skin as our hair it can be a trial and error as I have found out.
What to do for sensitive skin?
- Wash your skin twice a day: use face washes that can absorb the extra oil from you face.
- Homemade Ingredients: You can use oatmeal and honey to clean the skin. Apply to the skin and leave on for 15 minutes and rinse with cold water. Oatmeal is great for absorbing oil from the face and honey as we is a great natural astringent that tightens oily skin and helps to prevent overproduction of sebum on the skin.
- Occupy your hands: Try not to touch your face; you do not want to transfer oils from another surface to your face or foods.
- Apply makeup products that are water based: oil base makeup maybe too heavy for the skin and only adds to the oil that you already have. Make sure to wash away makeup from the skin and allow the skin to breathe. Buy products that are made for oily skin.
- Allow the skin to breathe: A lot of times when we have breakouts it could also be because the skin cannot breathe. The best thing to do is remove any excess oil or dead skin. Cleanse your skin gently to allow the skin to breathe. Believe it or not this will allow your skin to shine again.
- Exfoliate your skin at least once or twice a week: I have been using brown sugar and honey once in a while I will use oatmeal instead of brown sugar.
- Steam your face: I do this often as it allows me to open my pores and remove excess oil, and also get rid of dead skin that may be clogging. It can be very relaxing and a great way to get rid of breakouts. This can be done before you wash you face or apply any DIY face remedies.
Cleansing your Oily skin:
Once I figured out that my skin was producing too much sebum and is prone to breakouts I began to understand what I needed to do. I have read many articles, watch many videos and read books to understand what I had to do since I already knew what sebum meant for the scalp. I began removing the dead skin from my pores to prevent blockage. I had a family member mention to use lime and cucumber, baking soda (which i have yet to try baking soda, I am weary about trying this, so I will have to do some research on this).
Essential Oils for Oily skin:
Sage, Lemon, Juniper, Grape seed oil, Bergamot, Peppermint oil, Vitamin E
Ayurveda and Home Remedies:
- Lime and Cucumber: Squeeze the juice from both the lime and cucumber mix together and apply to face before you wash or take a hot bath.
- Aloe Vera: Aloe Vera is not only great for the hair but also for the skin because of its healing properties.
- Apple cider vinegar: I use this to remove excess oil especially on day that I wear make-up. I do not wear makeup often as is one a quest to have natural glowing beautiful skin. The acid helps to remove the excess oil from your skin
- Lemon juice, flour, turmeric powder: Mix together and apply all over the face, once dry, rinse. Lemon juice is a great home remedy for dark spots and clearing the complexion. Turmeric brightens the look. Your skin will fell renewed. Turmeric is also used for many other herbal remedies and some drink it as a tea.
- Vitamin E: I use this some night after my face wash as a moisturize I find it does wonders for my skin. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant it prevents skin damage and is great for soften the skin.
- Honey: Hones is a natural moisturizer, apply a thin layer of honey all over the face and wash it off. This can also be done as mention before with sugar to exfoliate the skin.
Clay masks Recipe:
Green Clay
2 drop of lemon juice
1tble honey
1tbsp of plain yogurt
2 drops of lavender oil
Add water and make a paste, apply all over the face and neck, once dry rinse. Clay is used by many because of its deep cleansing properties.
Diet: Our diet is important what you eat often appears on the skin. Avoid fried foods, junk food, and soft drinks. The intake of fat in your diet should be reduced as well and your fluid intake increase. Drinking lots of water will rid your body of toxins and keep your skin hydrated. This is also great for my natural hair ladies looking to maximize their healthy hair growth. Include proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet.

Fairy Knots
Fairy Knots
For the last few weeks I have encountered these so called fairy knots because of my lack of detangling. I usually detangled with my wide tooth comb, but lately opted to use my hands. This no-comb method may not be working at all because I recently discovered fairy knots all over my hair. I didn`t even know what they were called until I did some research about these little tiny weeny knots. I always love to share when I learn something new, see I figured out why they are popping up and why I hadn’t had them before.
What are fairy knots?
After a few days of research I discovered that fairy knots are the single strand knots and happens more often than we would like to think. They are called fairy knots because they are so tiny in size only a fairy could have tied it.
Why are there Knots in my Natural hair?
Natural hair can be very coily and curly, because of the twist and turns it can knot up on its own. When you discover you have fairy knots it is wise to look after them right away. They can cause breakage and split ends and that will prevent you from retaining length. I always stress paying close attention to your hair, check up on your hair frequently to keep the fairies away.
Problems:
· Lack of frequently conditioning and moisturizing
· Split ends
· Inconsistent detangle
· Wearing hair wild and loose and flowing free
Solutions:
Moisturize
Make sure to moisturize daily with your leave-in which should be water based and seal your ends with oil or butter. I have been using Shea butter and castor oil to help me with this problem. It has been working wonders for me.
Protective styling
Make sure that your hair is protected; hair that is left out and not properly cared for can get dry and brittle and result in split ends and cause breakage. When you do your twists make sure your ends are twisted all the way through to your ends and protected, this will help keep the ends from friction on your clothes and shoulders. This goes for any protective styling, protect your ends.
Deep Condition
You can detangle your ends by soaking your hair in conditioner; however the ends can break off and cause more damage so you have to be gentle with this method. Make sure to detangle your hair often and moisturize you hair when wet so that it absorbs the nutrients and is able to maintain healthy ends.
Trim your ends
If you discover unruly ends or knots cut them off, for me it is very frustration to discover these knots in my hair. I have been able to keep them away by simply just getting rid of them when I find them and using these methods to make sure they don’t return.
Oil Rinse
I tried this a while back and it worked really well for my hair. I simply just mixed oils together and let it sit in my hair for a few hours and then I rinse it out. You have to be careful not to use too much you don’t want oily hair and make sure to get as much oil out of your hair.
What you should know:
If you do not handle with care and get rid of fairy knots they can travel up the ends of your hair to the roots causing breakage. Try detangling in the shower I tend to do this a lot and notice when I stop I discovered fairy knots in my hair. Some naturals argue that everyone has them, to be honest before I stop detangle and went no comb method I had no knots, so am going back to my routine to retain the length. Make sure to remove the knots from your strands, I prefer not to cut all my ends because I find one knot. I will usually sit down and go through my knots and remove them one by one. I know it can be annoying, but do you really want to cut your hair off unless you need a trim. Getting a trim will help as well but if you have a few knots just take them out.
Do you have fairy knots?
What is your method for removing them?
Feel free to share how you combat the fairies.

Remember my method and what I have found from research may be different than yours, so feel free to share your story and what works for you. It will not only help yourself but others dealing with this issue.
